EDITORIAL GUIDELINES FOR ADVERTISING
When composing the ad it’s VERY important to follow these key guidelines and etiquette:
- Maximum lenght for a solo ad is 100 lines @ 60 characters per line.
- Maximum lenght for a sponsor ad is 15 lines @ 40 characters per line.
- Maximum lenght for a RSS feed ad is 15 lines @ 60 characters per line.
- Maximum lenght for a classified ad is 5 lines @ 40 characters per line.
- Don’t type in ALL CAPS; this will make readers think you are ‘shouting’ and can take away from the real
value of your message. Emphasize with text editors using italics, bolding, and underlining instead.
- The subject line is strictly limited to 60 characters. Less characters is better.
- When it comes to email marketing, the best subject lines tell what's inside, and the worst
subject lines sell what's inside.
- If your email is a special promotion, tell them what's inside. Either way, just don't write your
subject lines like advertisements.
- Use the headline inside the ad to grab their attention, but make it unique and compelling so it doesn’t
sound like a sales pitch.
- Do NOT use ALL CAPS in the subject line. The editor will remove it.
- Use the headline / subject line analyzer here to see how well it scores.
- Take the time to proofread for ALL spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
- Keep the message concise and easy to read. Don't waste peoples time with fluff.
- Provide brief quotes for the most effective impact.
- Make the message short but interesting enough so that the reader will want to read more on
your web site.
- Make sure your message is useful and informative; avoid lengthy text that will bore your
reader.
- Don't include your private phone number or personal email address. Your email address WILL
be picked up by all the spam robots and you'll never know who is going to call you at any hour day or night. It
is MUCH better to use a lead capture page, often called a squeeze page or a landing page for
first-time traffic. Simply ask for the prospects phone number, and then follow up with your prospects that
way.
- BEST: Use autoresponders. Build up your own list. See http://www.aweber.com for details.
- Don't use the URL of other people's websites / domain names in your ad. Use a URL re-direct service such as
tinyurl.com or better yet use your own domain name and have it re-direct to the company site. For effective
ACT NOW kind of link redirection please check out http://www.8net.org/a/
- Replicated web sites provided by your company: Major Problem #1: People see these sites
all the time via online advertisng (banner ads, ezine ads, etc. Result #1: They will be
ignored your replicated web site 99.9% of the time AND you will not get the results you expect due to this.
Instead, you should consider creating your own lead capture pages. I recommend this service: Ez Lead Capture which has several capture pages for hundreds of
business opportunities already created and available. If your business opportunity is not already there, you
can either create one with the online tools or pay approx $75 to have them create one for you. (A
bargain)

- Colors, bold, italic, etc. is NOT recommended. However, I can do it if you clearly specify everything.
- Don't repeat the URL more than a maximum of 3 times. Once in the top third, once in the
middle, and once at the end is more than enough.
- Use {FIRSTNAME} where you want to show the subscribers first name, but don't overdo
it.
- Avoid using the standard solo ads from your opportunity. If you can afford it at all it is far better to
have your own solo ad copy written by a professional copywriter. Use Google to find one for your budget.
- If you can't afford a professional copywriter, at least change the standard subject line to something
else.
- Do not send your ad copy in Word. Send it as plain text without any formatting.
- This free software http://www.xmailwrite.com/ will help you format and write you ad copy so that it will
pass through the spamfilters with more ease. I use it myself all the time.
- Please ask me if you have ANY questions at all. I am here to help.
