"Relationship Marketing" A Powerful Secret To Get Hot Prospects Coming To You! By C.L. Tucker
One day in one of my many conversations with Tom Schreiter (a.k.a. "Big Al"), I asked him how he had developed so many relationships with so many people.
The more I got to know him, the more I realized he knew a lot of network marketers in a lot of different companies, and it seemed that every one of them had a major amount of respect for him.
Tom is a master at staying very generic when he talks to other Network Marketers about their businesses; this allows him to help them without them feeling threatened. When they don't feel threatened, they are more open to his suggestions and are able to learn more from him.
Over a period of time he builds a powerful relationship with people who get to know, like and trust him. And when the time is right, many people then come to Tom asking him to sponsor them into his company because they trust him.
How would you like to have qualified, excited people asking you to sponsor them into your business?
What I am about to explain to you is not for the weak at heart, closed-minded, or the impatient distributor. Teaching "people skills" takes time and patience. You have to be willing to take a long-term approach to the method of sponsoring I will be talking about. In fact, at first it may be a hard concept to grasp.
That's ok, I really didn't understand it at first either. It will, however, show you the importance of helping others with their businesses, even when you think you have nothing to gain. You could be quite surprised.
Many people are sponsored by someone who knows absolutely nothing about the MLM business. They get involved because of the relationship they have with the person who sponsored them. If the sponsor doesn't know how to work the business, and they have no other upline support, then you have distributors that drop out, constantly change companies, or end up in the "what to do next" black hole of Network Marketing and don't do anything.
In my case, I was sponsored by my dad. He didn't know anything about network marketing; he had worked in the construction business all of his life. He was suffering from major health problems and was introduced to a product that had an amazing result on his health.
Sound familiar? I had been working in a research and development department of a major oil company for eight years, and in the oil business for around thirteen years. I certainly didn't know anything about network marketing. In other words, if my dad had been the swimming instructor, and I was the student, we would have both drowned.
I got excited about the product and what it did for him. Like many people, I saw the potential and the opportunity it presented. Unfortunately, being introduced to the product first did very little to actually teach me how to work a network marketing business, along with all the important aspects of locating and teaching people. I found out later of course, that many people had the exact same start as I did, and with the exact same result.
One day I realized that like me, people didn't do things because they are lazy; they just didn't know what to do. I certainly wasn't lazy. I did everything I thought I was supposed to do and more. I realized I wanted to make Network Marketing my career, and I wanted to work network marketing the right way.
After I had been in the business for over three years I realized that nothing I was doing was working very well. I just kept doing the same things over and over again. Things that never worked in the first place. I was searching for answers from people who had no clue either, but I kept looking anyway. I knew that it was the only way I was going to achieve the success I wanted.
That was when I had the first opportunity to meet with and talk to Tom.
Tom was totally different from anyone I had ever talked to. He offered to help me with my business with no strings attached. All along in my marketing career up to the time I met Tom, when I talked to people about how to do the business, they were more concerned about how I could join them and how great their business was. It was quite clear most of them were more concerned with themselves.
From the day I met Tom till the day I asked him to sponsor me was a period of a little over two years. And I had to ask him to sponsor me. When I first met Tom, my self-esteem had hit rock-bottom and I had no idea which direction I needed to go, but there was Tom always ready to assist me and his advice was always non-obtrusive. He would call every now and then and let me know he was there to help. But not once in the two years we talked did I know what company he was in, nor did I care. He was just there to be a sounding board and give good advice.
One day, just as if it had been planned and choreographed, I called him and asked him if I could join him. It was on that day I found out what company he was in. Here is the fact; I knew Tom for two years, and I had to ask him to join him. My life has never been the same. And like so many others, I owe it to him for helping me get to where I am today. So that is the purpose of this article; to continue to teach a principle that is so powerful it has developed some of the most prominent leaders in our industry.
During the two and a half years I knew Tom, never once did we ever talk about product or who had the best company. Not that it mattered. Tom told me that everyone's company was the best, and that everyone had the best product, product literature, company president, best marketing program and of course theirs would be the next billion-dollar company. All of which mattered to some extent, but really just added to the confusion and overall noise.
That was my first education on how to be different from everyone else. After Tom pointed that out to me, his little secret became real simple to figure out. When someone tells you how good their company is, you agree and offer to help them by giving them some of your old leads. (The ones who didn't join you) and just basically realize that their company is just as good as your company. JUST TELL THEM SO. You also need to congratulate them on making a choice that is right for them. And leave it at that.
Here is what you need to do: Build a long-term relationship with as many people as you can. EXPECT NOTHING IN RETURN. You are looking for ways to start building a relationship with them. You are slowly building the know you, like you, and trust you relationship.
Cramming your business down their throat while they are trying to do the same to you is not the way to do it. You have to learn to plant seeds today so that you have a crop in the future. Reap what you sow.
Tom took a very long-term approach to our relationship. Instead of talking me into his company, he did everything he could to help me with the company I was in. He wanted me to show effort, motive, and drive. I needed to show how important it was to me to not only succeed in Network Marketing, but to succeed in life.
He was teaching me his skills by example. The simplicity of it is amazing! Can you imagine the number of people you could put into your company over time just by helping them with their business?
I wrote an article a while back that was featured in several industry publications. It was about most people having a small warm market. It is so true. The more I travel around and do seminars, the more evident it is. What I want to convey to you in this article is to simply step back and look at the overall picture. One of the most effective ways to build or rebuild your warm market is to simply help the people you come into contact with; with whichever company they are already in.
One of the most exciting parts of our industry is the fact that most Network Marketing businesses go out of business in their first couple of years. At first, you might think this sounds rather shallow, however, this is an important fact to know. You could very well be in one of these companies, or you could have had an experience with a company that has gone out of business.
When these companies go out of business, people will be looking for their next opportunity. In some cases they will be looking for someone they already know and will join their company. If you have spent the time cultivating a relationship with them, you stand a good chance of them joining you.
If you are out of a warm market, and you don't have people to constantly talk to, you are dead in the water. This is when your network marketing seems to slow down quite a bit. When I joined my first marketing company, I was working at a job where it was impossible to meet people, much less have the time to get to know them.
When I joined my second network marketing company (which was Tom's), I didn't have any warm market left. And I didn't have any clue as to how I was going to succeed. It was only on the faith that I had developed in Tom that got me by.
Here is some of the best advice I can ever give you to help you build your Network Marketing business. Look at other people as someone you can assist in building a business, even when your own numbers are low. Build your business for the long term, and don't compromise it.
Step back and think long and hard about what I have said in this article. One day you can look back and see all of the people you have helped and all of the powerful relationships you have built. And consider this one last final thought;
One day in one of my conversations with Tom he mentioned an important fact. He said, "The reason that ninety-five percent of the people in this business will fail is because they won't do what the five percenters are doing. Do you want to be successful with what you are doing in this business? Simply find a five percenter and start doing what they do; that is all I have done. Good luck with your marketing.
