"How To Promote Your MLM Program For Under $100 A Month!" By Robert Blackman
One of the biggest problems I've had in building a large organization in my various MLM programs is finding people who will duplicate my efforts. Sure, I know how to recruit hundreds of people personally, but why isn't my downline doing the same thing?
What has always bewildered me in MLM is those people who sign up in one of my programs, do absolutely NOTHING and drop out in 90 days! And, then they have the audacity to say that MLM doesn't work! The truth is, they didn't do any work and their commission check reflected that. Success in MLM is a reflection of how much work you've done -- in this vein MLM is unforgiving. Unlike a corporate job, where many get paid regardless of their efforts, MLM rewards those who do the work.
I used to spend hours on the phone talking to these people listening to their "reasons" for dropping out. You've heard them before, too:
- I don't have any time
- I don't have any money to promote the program
- I don't like to sell
- I hate rejection
- I'm not very good on the phone
- The products are too expensive
- The products don't work
- Nobody in my upline will help me
After a few months of hearing these types of excuses from my "ex-downline" I even started questioning what in the world I was doing spending my hard earned money and precious time in this crazy industry! After being in MLM for over 7 years I've come up with a couple of conclusions and more importantly a philosophy in general about people in MLM.
First, here's my hard fact conclusion about being successful in MLM:
"You won't make money in MLM unless you have a simple, effective and affordable duplicatable recruiting system in place for your downline to implement."
So, what does that mean? Simple. You have to have a system of recruiting people into your particular program that ANYONE in your downline can use. I found myself recruiting 50 to 100 new people a month into my programs through card deck advertising. This was great for me, but I quickly found out that my downline didn't have $1500 to put into a card deck advertisement.
When my downline called me up and asked what they needed to do in order to sponsor others, I simply said, "run my ad in a card deck!" As you might suspect, NOBODY in my downline was able to duplicate my efforts. That's when I started the "co-op" idea. What I would do was sell shares in my card-deck ads at $100 a piece.
I found that about 20% of my organization could afford $100 a month in advertising. This did help my organization grow, but there was still that 80% of my group who couldn't afford their monthly product purchase plus $100 for advertising.
Plus, there was usually a 2-4 month time delay to run an ad in a card deck until the time my new downline member actually received any leads -- and you guessed it, by that time over 80% of my organization had dropped out.
After many hours on the phone with my "inactive" downline I found that the biggest two excuses for dropping out were lack of time and money. So, my thought was, if I could eliminate these two excuses that everybody would become active! Right? Well, almost. There isn't a system in existence today that will guarantee that everyone in your downline will use.
Remember, you're dealing with people. And people are very unpredictable.
But, what I did find, was a system that eliminated the excuses. And, if my downline failed to participate in my system, then I knew right then that they weren't serious about their MLM business -- and I would stop wasting my time in trying to "convince" them to do something.
My system involves using post-cards in order to generate qualified leads for my MLM. This system works for all of my programs -- so it will work for yours, too, if you have a well-written post-card.
You can get involved in most any MLM program today with a month commitment of around $39. For around $17 you can have 100 post-cards printed and buy 100 MLM names. To mail 100 post-cards your cost is only $20. Let's look at your monthly commitment:
Product or service $39 100 Post-cards/100 MLM Names $17 Postage for 100 Post-cards $20
Total monthly commitment $76
This "system" can be used with almost any MLM today. You might have to spend a little more on your monthly product purchases or the post-cards and names. But, the bottom line is that for under $100 a month ANYONE can participate in this program.
If, someone in your downline doesn't have $100 a month to spend, then kindly tell them that their only other avenue is through word-of-mouth advertising, or warm marketing. Plus, remind them that they got into MLM to make money. If they don't have at least $100 a month to invest into their business they shouldn't expect a big return -- especially in the first year.
I call these people the "under 100 club." They are short-term thinkers. They don't want to invest much, but expect a lot in return -- get real! When has life ever given anyone someone of value when value wasn't created first? You're right, NEVER!
So, how what kind of results should you expect by just mailing 100 post-cards a month? That depends upon the following things:
- How well your post-card is written
- The list you use
- How fast you respond to the requests
- How good your recruiting piece is
Currently, I am receiving around a 10% response rate to the post-cards that I mail out for my various programs. If I mail 1,000 post-cards, I normally get 100 requests for more information. In turn, I am covering 10% to 20% of those leads or 10 to 20 sign ups a month. Let's look at my monthly costs:
1000 post-cards/names $170 Postage $200
Total $370
Cost to mail 100 packets $35 Postage $32
Total $67
My grand total to spend per month to convert 10 to 20 people into my program is $437. If I only recruit 10 people my cost per distributor is $43.70. But, if I recruit 20 people my cost is only $21.85! So, how do you recruit 20 instead of 10 -- YOU CALL THEM!
Calling your prospect greatly increases your response rate. But, if you're not ready to call your leads, nor do you have $437 a month to spend on your MLM then let's go back to my 100 example.
If you mail 100 post-cards your total cost to mail is $37. If you get 10 respondents to your post-card your cost to mail your offer to them will be $3.50 plus $3.20 for postage. This gives you a grand total of $43.70. If you sponsor one person your cost is $43.70 (the same as above), or if your recruit two people from your 10 then your cost is only $21.85 per person.
The concept here is very, very simple. Everyone in your downline can afford to mail 100 post-cards a month. And, if your post-card pulls well you should be able to convert at least 1 person from that 100 mailing into your program -- or a 1% response to your initial mailing -- a very believable and achievable standard for your downline to duplicate!
Have I ever mailed a 100 post-cards and had nobody sign up? Yes I have. But, I have also had over 20 people sign up from a mailing of 100 post-cards. The key point to get across to your downline is if they only have around $100 bucks a month to spend this is the best alternative for them to use -- unless they want to use warm marketing.
And if your downline wants to sign up more than 1 or 2 people a month have them mail MORE post-cards. Maybe they can afford to mail 250, 500 or even 1,000. Regardless of how many they mail, get them to mail at least 100. Imagine having 100 people in your organization mailing 100 post-cards a month! That would mean 10,000 post-cards being mailed, 1,000 people responding and 100 people joining your downline! See how easy this is?
The simple fact is unless your downline learns to duplicate your efforts in your MLM you will ALWAYS be delegated to personally sponsoring more and more people every month to replace those who drop out. By using my post-card system you are enabling your downline an affordable avenue to participate. Plus, mailing post-cards is non-threatening -- they just have to lick a stamp and drop them in the mail. This takes the fear away of being rejected, plus, it is easy and affordable.
If you really want to eliminate the "time" objection of your downline, then I suggest that you have all the post-card responses come back to your office and you do the fulfillment! In other words, your downline mails the post-cards, you get the responses and you mail them your offer! This will take a lot of organization and time on your part, but it will also increase the number of your downline members who participate in your post-card program.
