$20 A Month? That's Ridiculous!
By Joe Butler
What is going on with this industry?
No wonder people correct you when you say MLM. "Don't say MLM, say Network Marketing."
No matter what terminology you use, this industry is plagued with failure and futility.
The number one reason for this is the lack of quality, business specific, education about this wonderful opportunity
industry!
Many of the people who get involved in this industry can justify spending $20-$30 a month on videos and beer, yet will slam
their check books closed when it comes to investing in their Network Marketing Business.
But, this attitude is not entirely their fault. It is instilled in them when their sponsor introduced them to Network
arketing.
Let me illustrate my point with a true story.
One Christmas, my son got an AM Radio Kit from his aunt for a present. "Build Your Own Radio", the box said. And, to a
9-year-old boy, the picture on the box was just irresistible. It portrayed a boy sitting at a table that was strewn with wires, magnets,
earphone, tools, and various other electronic parts.
The boy on the box had a look of excitement and a big smile on his face as he adjusted the tuner and listened in the
headphones. The picture on the box was irresistible! Here was a young boy who built his own radio and was enjoying the fruits of his
labor.
My son's eyes lit up! He immediately ran to the dining room and dumped the contents of the box out on the table. He looked just
like the boy in that picture on the box.
Now, I went over to the table to help him, and as I pulled up a chair to sit down I was sharply rebuked. "Dad, I can do it
myself!" I hadn't even had a chance to verbally offer my assistance. "OK", I said, and I walked over to the living room and took a position on
the couch where I could watch my son build his radio.
Now, I began to watch human nature at its best. He picked up the instruction booklet, thumbed through it for a second then
gazed at the picture on the box that previously held the components (which were now strewn all over the table).
I could almost hear his thoughts. "This doesn't look too difficult. It's simple. Just wrap this wire around a tube, hook up a
couple of connectors, and presto, an instant AM Radio!"
He threw down the instruction booklet and began to get to work. As he began to work, my focus turned to other various
activities that were happening because of the holiday. I watched my other kids playing with their presents. Talked to my wife a bit then turned
to see how my son was doing.
Now, what I saw, I am sure was the scene in thousands of homes that night with boys of similar age that had received their AM
Radio Kits for Christmas. He had copper wire strung all over the table, around his arms, on the floor, everywhere.
And it was chinked in so many places that there was no salvaging it. He had tape stuck to his shirt and in front of him was a
broken tubular object along with several other parts. The look on his face was one of frustration and sorrow.
I wonder how many of those radio kits would have been sold if the radio kit marketing people would have used the scene of
frustration that I was looking at for the picture on the box that held the radio components? They probably would not have sold very many. But,
whose fault was this failure?
Was it the presentation on the box? Was it the company who designed the kit? Was it defective parts? Was it dad's fault? No, it
was my son's failure to take the time to learn how to build the radio correctly. He refused my help and discarded the instructions because the
picture on the box made success look easy.
Now, all of the ingredients were there for success, but the lure of the quick, easy way was more appealing than taking the time
to read the instructions.
This is just what happens in the Network Marketing Industry every day. People are presented with this wonderful opportunity.
They see a picture of someone way up in their upline, who is just an average person like them, only they are earning thousands of dollars per
month and driving a beautiful car and taking 2 or 3 vacations per year.
So, the new Networker jumps in, thinking they don't need anyone else telling them how to build their business. Heck if their
upline, who previously was a two time loser, can be successful in this industry then this business must be a cinch . a no brainer!
So, they literally throw the instruction booklet aside and delve headlong into their Network Marketing Business thinking they
are going to end up just like that picture of success that was presented to them.
Instead, they end up with rejection, ridicule, failure, and defeat. Just like my son. They didn't take the time to "read" the
instructions and learn how to work the business. And so, Network Marketing being an "Easy In" business, is also an "Easy Out". Another one bites
the dust. MLM has just become a "dirty" word to them.
This industry is in dire need of instruction and education. The failure rate is too high and there is only one reason. People
don't know how to build a network marketing organization that will continue to pay them for years and years to come. They lack the instructions
they need to be successful.
Oh, they try their best. They jump in and talk to everyone. They do conference calls, they do postcard mailings, they do 3 way
calling, they do "one-on-one's", they place ads, and yet, in spite of all this, they fall short. Why? Because they didn't educate themselves
first. They either had no instructions or had poor instructions at best.
Folks, if you are serious about your business, the best money you can spend is money spent on educating yourself about this
industry and how to be successful in it.
